Big Sur - Camping along the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

After Jan extinguished a unattended fire at a nearby campsite we departed Prewitt Ridge.
And drove west down the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road headed for more fog and cooler temperatures.
Our plan was to camp at one of the many pullouts along the road.
On our drive up to Prewitt two days earlier we had observed many other people camping in the same manner.
Luckily this wide pullout was open and put us about 700 feet above the ocean. Two days earlier a family with a popup tent camper was set up at this spot.

We set up our chairs and relaxed watching the ocean below and reading.
Later that afternoon a young man named Tal stopped on the road alongside our truck to ask if it was okay to camp in the pullouts. I jokingly replied, "yes, if you made a reservation with the forest service." Later we invited him to join us to share our narrow section of dirt and gravel.
Far to the west ships were moving up and down the coast.
As the sun began to set the lights of vehicles became visible on Highway 1.
Far in the distance, high third right, a light from a passing ship is just visible in the growing fog.

Foggy dawn on the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.
In the photo above it appeared as if we were alone but many people were camping along the road.
Between the camp in the photo and our location there were several other vehicles parked in turnouts.
Beautiful landscapes alongside the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road but the hillsides were heavily infested with poison oak.
After breakfast Tal headed south and we prepared to move on to our next camp.

  1. Did you need an adventure pass to park your vehicles in these turnouts?

    1. We did not have an Adventure Pass. A ranger drove by but did not stop.
      Cheers.

  2. I'm trying to find a specific end of the road campsite that was featured in this "On Two Wheels" episode (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5uclto)

I think it's around this area you visited...do you have a better idea where it's at? Maybe lat/long?

  3. Where in Prewitt is that first picture?
Doesn't look like the same site as the previous day...
    Thanks!

  4. The Mud Creek slide has caused a large volume of traffic to be rerouted along Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. The USFS has prohibited roadside camping along Nacimiento-Fergusson Road through at least August 10, 2018. Be sure to check with the USFS for details.
